You can improve the growth and health of your plants with just a little extra time and attention.

  • Prepare your soil before planting by loosening the tops six inches, adding organic matter and mixing well.
  • Don’t smother your plants with soil. Most plants only require a layer of soil about ¼ inch thick.
  • Remove weeds as quickly as possible as they steal important nutrients and water from your growing plants.
  • For flowering plants, deadhead faded petals to restore the health and performance of the entire plant.

Plant disease only occurs when all three sides of the triangle are present, so keep at least one side from occurring and you can ensure the health of your plants. The plant triangle forms when the following things are present:

  • A pathogen – such as a fungus, virus or bacteria
  • The right environmental conditions – such as humidity or drought
