Mulch and Compost
Hardwood shredded mulch and mushroom compost are the most common materials for landscape beds. Hardwood shredded mulch is a long lasting material that is readily available. This type of mulch is recommended for use around tree and shrubs. Typically to receive all the benefits of the mulch the layer must be maintained at between 3" and 5" thick. Care must be taken not to pile mulch up against trunks and stems of landscape plants. Careless placement of mulch in this manner can lead to stem rots and insect problems.
Mushroom compost is the recommended covering for perennial and annual beds. Mushroom compost breaks down into organic materials and nutrients that are very benifical to these fast growing and nutrient demanding plants.
